Cycle 3: 4th–5th Grade

In Cycle 3, our students continue to expand their knowledge in all subjects. However, the mastery of the French language and basic math are the primary focus of these grades.

Our students hone their French skills through presentations, dictation, and the study of literature. They become more acquainted with technology and computers through carefully planned projects and lessons. In math, they work on abstract and concrete problem solving, geometry, and organizing data. Art, music, English, and physical education continue to play an important role.

Main Components

Reading, Writing, & Language Skills

In Cycle 3, our students practice listening, speaking in front of others, and asking questions using specific words. They also work on memorizing and reciting short texts.

Reading and writing are part of everything our students do. They read age-appropriate stories and learn to find the main ideas, notice details, and share their thoughts about what they read. They also do creative writing and research-based, non-fictional writing.

Our students continue improving their grammar, vocabulary, and spelling. They learn how to tell different kinds of sentences apart and figure out the job of each word in a sentence. They also practice matching words correctly, using verbs the right way, and spelling tricky words. All of this helps them get better at speaking, writing, and understanding stories.

Math

In math, our students keep building their skills by solving problems and learning new ways to find answers. They work with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. They solve problems in their heads, write them out on paper, or use a calculator to help.

Our students learn about shapes and geometry and use tools like a compass to draw and practice what they learn. They also study measurement, including time, length, and money. They put all their skills together to learn how to analyze and organize data, like making charts and graphs to showcase what they have learned.

Science

Our students explore the natural world and learn how people affect it. They start to understand the difference between facts, ideas that have been tested, and personal opinions. They use their curiosity to observe, ask questions, and learn about things in the world. They study exciting topics like matter, water, Earth, the sky, energy, living things, and the human body. These lessons help them understand how the world works!

Technology

Our students use computers and iPads to find and share information for their projects. They also use these tools to communicate with their friends in France. Our teachers help students learn how to use web apps safely and responsibly.

History & Geography

In Cycle 3, students learn about important times in history. They study Prehistoric times, Antiquities, Middle Ages, French Revolution, and big events from the 20th century. In geography, our students discover how people live in different places. They start by learning about their own area, then look at places all around the world. They learn about different landscapes, how people travel, important economies, and natural resources that help people live and work.

Music

In music class, our students sing, play vocal games, and perform on their own. They learn about pitch (high and low sounds), tempo (fast and slow), and the structure of music. They also use their bodies to feel the rhythm by moving to the beat.

Art

Our students learn about different kinds of art from around the world and from different times in history. They create 3D art by building models of buildings and rooms. Our students also study famous artists and the techniques they used. They even try to replicate the works of important painters. They practice their own creativity while learning about art from the past.

Physical Education

Physical education builds our students’ self-confidence, motor skills, and athletic ability. They learn to adapt their physicality to different types of environments. Our students take part in team sports and individual time trials. They also do activities aimed to strengthen coordination and balance. Cycle 3 students also get to learn how to swim at the Southwest Community Center pool, making PE both fun and practical!
